UK Military Ditches Samsung For iPhone 7 Because Of Security Issues With Android

In what will be a bitter blow to Samsung, and indeed the Android platform in general, a new innovative program involving the military in the United Kingdom, has dropped the use of Samsung devices, and instead moved across to Apple’s latest iPhone 7.

The move has come after serious security flaws were found in the Android operating system, creating the potential for the whole program to be undermined. As a result, the program is now focusing its attention to modified iPhone 7 smartphones.

The program – which, as you can imagine, is highly secretive given that it’s focused on the U.K. armed forces – is being designed to allow military personnel and those with the correct clearance to discuss military secrets via a smartphone. The U.K. Ministry of Defense is working in conjunction with BT on the project, with the telecommunications company confirming that Apple’s iPhone 7 will be the “device of choice” going forward for secretive communications.

Rather than using a standard, off-the-shelf, iPhone 7, BT’s technical business manager for defense, Steve Bunn, has confirmed that the hardware will be modified to allow different modes of operation and varying levels of security. Those modes and sensitive levels will be crucial for the different types of data being transmitted.

Bunn has also stipulated that his company has been working extremely closely with the U.K. MoD to develop what they are calling a “dual-persona device”, or basically a device that is capable of being put into “official” and “secret” modes depending on the use case. BT is also working with the MoD to take the device to the next level by introducing “secure storage containers” within the iPhone’s file system in order to make it capable of securely storing sensitive filters and folders within directories, which could allow mission-critical information to be held securely on a device to be used when necessary.

It’s interesting to see BT and the U.K. MoD looking towards Apple’s iPhone 7 for this type of project. Organizations who require this level of security typically bank towards a more high-end tailored device, such as the Boeing Black, which adopts a highly modified, highly secure version of Android to fulfill the needs of the customer. The MoD already makes use of Apple’s devices internally, so it could be a case of better the devil you know.

Apparently, real photo of Samsung Galaxy S8, along with its specs, price and release date has been leaked. Here are the details.

2017 is a big year for Samsung, and the Galaxy S8 is the phone that the company’s hopes are currently riding on for taking it out of a post-Galaxy Note 7 gloom and into a bright new future. Hopes are high that the Galaxy S8 will prove popular amongst fans of Samsung’s previous flagships, and in order to try and ensure that is the case, the company is pulling out all the stops. In a new leak by Evan Blass via VentureBeat, we’ve now been given our first proper look at the Galaxy S8, and we now also have more details on what it will bring to the table as far as features are concerned.

The first thing that needs to be mentioned is the fact that two Galaxy S8 handsets will be on offer this year, similar to previous years. However, this time around, both sizes will feature Samsung’s Edge technology, meaning curved screens are the order of the day here. There will be two different screen sizes on offer though, and both will be huge.

According to Blass, Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 will feature 5.8- and 6.2-inch QHD Super AMOLED screens that cover 83 percent of the phones’ faces. That’s a huge percentage, and means that these devices will look as close to bezel-free as we’ve seen so far.

That’s thanks to the lack of a fingerprint sensor on the front of the device, with Samsung opting to move it to the rear. Other phone makers have done the same thing in the past, so this shouldn’t be an issue. However, the placement of the sensor – to the side of the camera – may be less than optimal. We’ll have to wait and see on that.

Beating at the heart of the new phones will be a chip based on 10nm architecture, and depending on the region in which the device is sold, that chip will either be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or a Samsung Exynos. Both will offer a reasonable speed bump over last year’s Galaxy S7. The new handsets will carry 4GB of RAM, just like the Galaxy S7 and 64GB of storage will be the base this time around. An SD card slot will cater for those who need an additional bump – cards up to and including 256GB are supported.

The rear-facing camera will continue to be a 12-megapixel part whilst the front-facing camera will be bumped to an 8-megapixel sensor. Alongside that camera will be a sensor for iris recognition, too, bringing the feature over from the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, as had been expected.

Other notes of interest are the use of a USB-C charging port and the inclusion of a headphone port, both of which will be well-received for differing reasons. The device will run Android Nougat, as is to be expected, and Blass says the handset will be announced at an event in New York on March 29th. Those already looking forward to placing orders will be able to buy a Galaxy S8 on April 21st. The 5.8-inch model will retail for €799 (~$850) and the 6.2-inch model at €899 (~$960). That’s €100 (~$107) more than the current models.

The app actually offers all the same support as Apple’s support website, giving users a list of their Apple devices, access to specific customer support by phone, chat, or email, and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to schedule a Genius Bar appointment. Those without an Apple Store nearby can also arrange for a repair through an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The Apple Support app isn’t all about getting help when something goes wrong, though. The app also makes how-to articles and other information available to owners of Apple products, right from an iPhone or iPad.

Flappy Bird Developer Releases Ninja Spinki Challenges Game For iOS, Android [Download]

Remember Dong Nguyen, the guy behind the 2014 phenomenon that was Flappy Bird? Sure you do, because he was a pretty big deal for a while there and made unimaginable sums of money from what was essentially a very simple game.

Nguyen disappeared for a good while, claiming he didn’t want the fame that came with making such a wildly popular game. He even took the game off the App Store. Now he’s back, and he has a new game for us to play – Ninja Spinki Challenges!!.

Available to download for free from both the App Store and Google Play Store, Ninja Spinki Challenges!! is a collection of six mini-games that require gamers to successfully complete a collection of trials that are aimed at training them to become a ninja. At first blush, the game isn’t quite so unforgiving as the infamously brutal Flappy Bird, but things soon start to get a little bit difficult.

The artstyle is identical to that of Nyugen’s previous works – the protagonist seems to have been lifted from the developer’s Swing Copters series – though the interface and gameplay do feel more refined in comparison.

Whether the game will enjoy the same success that Flappy Bird managed to achieve remains to be seen, and while that title managed to tap into the gamer inside all of us, this game may be a little too game-y to appeal to the same audience. We’ll have to wait and see.

As for myself, I’m not sure I’m quite ready to be infuriated at my own inability to play a game in the same way I was the first time around.

iOS 10.3 Public Beta 1

On the face of things, iOS 10.3 beta 1 doesn’t look to be a huge step forward for the platform, but does actually contain a number of interesting and exciting improvements. First and foremost, Apple has furnished the Find My iPhone app with the ability to locate lost AirPods, meaning you don’t have to worry about losing one of the lose little Pods. Apple has also improved the ability of Siri, much to the pleasure of cricket fans, by allowing Siri to check and report back international and Indian Premiere League cricket match scores. Improving Siri also seems to be hot on the agenda with a number of improvements to SiriKit to bring additional functionality, like paying bills, scheduling (instead of just ordering) rides with Uber and Lyft, and even checking the status of payments.

The company has also made some smaller improvements, such as adding Reduce Motion support into Safari, bringing a new Podcasts app widget, and even adding HomeKit enhancements, as well as a new hourly weather forecast via 3D Touch actions in Maps app.

iOS 10.3 also means that the iPhone and iPad will be the first devices to adopt Apple’s new file system, APFS.

macOS Sierra 10.12.4 Public Beta 1

macOS Sierra is an extremely popular platform, but the public beta download is not going to be anywhere near as popular as the iOS seed which has been released alongside it. Those are just the facts as consumers look to see what’s new in iOS, which can be utilized on iPhone, ahead of what new improvements have been made on Mac.

It may not be as popular, but it’s still a very worthwhile download, and very much worth interacting with the new Night Shift mode which Apple has introduced in order to take the display to the warmer end of the spectrum at night time to take the burden off the eyes. There’s also the introduction of a multitude of bug fixes, improvements, and under-the-hood enhancements designed to make Macs running macOS 10.12.4 a lot smoother and fluid.
